16 February 2010 - UNICEF: Mogadishu, Somalia - The escalation of violence in Somalia between government forces and the Al-Shabaab militia is making delivery of aid increasingly difficult. But over a three month period, a campaign supported by UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) managed to distribute health packages to nearly half a million women and children throughout the capital, Mogadishu. Since the beginning of February, more than 8,000 people have left the city to escape the fighting that is said to be raging in several areas. Malnutrition is a chronic problem in all areas of Somalia and appears primarily because of drought, flooding or localized conflict. And without access to food, the quality of diet and environmental conditions contribute to the poor nutritional status of children. SOUNDBITE (English) Patrick McCormick, Spokesman, UNICEF: Work being done on nutrition, education, protection health. Problems in southern Somalia are amongst the worst for children in the world without any question. I believe there are some 1.9 million children who are need of some sort of humanitarian assistance at any given time. So its a very critical operation. But over a three month period, a campaign supported by UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) managed to distribute health packages to nearly half a million women and children throughout the capital, Mogadishu. With the help of local authorities and community organizations, children were immunized against polio, measles, diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus, and received Vitamin A, de-worming tablets and nutritional screening. SOUNDBITE, Halima Elmi, mother of eight (Somali): Our living conditions are not good. We dont have health facilities, no water, no shelter, and we dont have job opportunities. I came today to see health workers who have vaccines. This is what the people need. Micronutrient deficiencies are serious health issues facing the population. Anemia is suspected to be high among women and adolescents, and iodine deficiency is a public health concern as access to iodized salt is extremely low. Part of the success of the campaign was its flexibility, all vaccines, supplies and health workers were on stand-by, ready to begin when and where the security situation allowed. There are more than 1.4 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Horn of Africa nation owing to escalating violence and a worsening humanitarian situation, with another 560,000 Somalis living as refugees in neighbouring and nearby countries. .................................................................................... Somali-born Canadian model. In 2004, she was named \"The Most Alluring Canadian\" in a poll by Fashion Magazine. She moved from Somalia to Toronto, Canada when she was fifteen. Warsame began modelling in 2000 with a booking for the Sears catalogue in Toronto. She was in her early 20s – and five months pregnant with her son Hamzah – when she accepted this shoot. She worked as a fashion model in Canada for almost two years. Her look, however, was considered too \"haute couture\" for the local scene, making work scarce. So, in the summer of 2002, Warsame headed to Paris. In that year her break-through came by a feature for the Italian Vogue, photographed by Steven Meisel. Warsame worked for agencies like Next Toronto/Montreal, IMG New York, Next Paris, Next London, View Barcelona and Tony Jones Amsterdam. She was on the covers of a.o. Vogue Italia and American Vogue. Her pictures were in the American and British Elle, Amica and Surface Magazine. She modelled for both the couture and ready-to-wear runways for everyone from Christian Dior to Jean Paul Gaultier. She did high-profile advertising campaigns for Valentino couture, Dolce & Gabbana, Escada, Hermès, Shiseido, Chanel, GAP and H&M. Warsame was (and from time to time still is) a volunteer for the Somali Youth Coalition in Canada. She studied psychology and also social sciences at Seneca College. [1]. Warsame recently became a judge on Canadian reality television series, Canada\'s Next Top Model, Cycle 2 [More] [Less]

The government maintains that it is not aware of any clandestine operation to recruit Kenyan youths of Somali origin to join the Somali military in war torn Somalia. According to police spokesman Eric Kiraithe, whatever was happening in Garissa could just be an operation to round up illegal immigrants from Somalia. But the council of imams and preachers has called for thorough investigations on the reports saying the situation could present a major security threat to Kenya. Olivia okech reports [More] [Less]
