SOMALIA CONFLICT: UNICEF & W.H.O. DELIVER HEALTH SUPPLIES to MOGADISHU |
| 16 February 2010 - UNICEF: Mogadishu, Somalia - The escalation of violence in Somalia between government forces and the Al-Shabaab militia is making delivery of aid increasingly difficult. But over a three month period, a campaign supported by UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) managed to distribute health packages to nearly half a million women and children throughout the capital, Mogadishu. Since the beginning of February, more than 8,000 people have left the city to escape the fighting that is said to be raging in several areas. Malnutrition is a chronic problem in all areas of Somalia and appears primarily because of drought, flooding or localized conflict. And without access to food, the quality of diet and environmental conditions contribute to the poor nutritional status of children. SOUNDBITE (English) Patrick McCormick, Spokesman, UNICEF: Work being done on nutrition, education, protection health. Problems in southern Somalia are amongst the worst for children in the world without any question. I believe there are some 1.9 million children who are need of some sort of humanitarian assistance at any given time. So its a very critical operation. But over a three month period, a campaign supported by UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) managed to distribute health packages to nearly half a million women and children throughout the capital, Mogadishu. With the help of local authorities and community organizations, children were immunized against polio, measles, diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus, and received Vitamin A, de-worming tablets and nutritional screening. SOUNDBITE, Halima Elmi, mother of eight (Somali): Our living conditions are not good. We dont have health facilities, no water, no shelter, and we dont have job opportunities. I came today to see health workers who have vaccines. This is what the people need. Micronutrient deficiencies are serious health issues facing the population. Anemia is suspected to be high among women and adolescents, and iodine deficiency is a public health concern as access to iodized salt is extremely low. Part of the success of the campaign was its flexibility, all vaccines, supplies and health workers were on stand-by, ready to begin when and where the security situation allowed. There are more than 1.4 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Horn of Africa nation owing to escalating violence and a worsening humanitarian situation, with another 560,000 Somalis living as refugees in neighbouring and nearby countries. .................................................................................... Child casualties rise in Somali war - Horror taking place 2010 |
| It is a sad moment to the family of a Somali boy who died after undergoing reconstructive surgery in a hospital in Kenya. Mohamed Mohamoud who was horribly disfigured months ago by a stray bullet in Somalia\'s violent capital died just days after the surgery. Photos of this boy are so moving and depicts the desperate nature that Somali is in and leaders world over should act for the sake of such kids who have been maimed and injured and are now going through huge suffering due to the war that has brought the country to its knees. Mohamed was only eight years old. His plight has drawn help word over and personified the civilian toll in the brutal conflict in Somalia, the bullet tore through his cheekbones, nose and mouth and destroyed his right eye. Mohamed died late Wednesday of intestinal bleeding that may have been caused by an ulcer or stress according to his doctor. It is a very sad situation to see such kids being robbed off lives by war, there are thousands children casualties in Somalia but the world is not aware due to the minimal media coverage there. |
