Nairobi, (insidesomalia.org) - The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution allowing foreign warships to enter Somalia's territorial waters to fight piracy.
The Security Council said it deplored acts of piracy and armed robbery off the coast of Somalia which impeded the delivery of vital relief and called for more international cooperation to tackle the problem.
The 15-member council passed a unanimous resolution on Monday with the consent of the Somalia's UN-backed transitional government.
Indonesia raised concerns that measures adopted to tackle piracy off the Somali coast may set a precedent for international intervention in its own waters.
Approving resolution 1816, the Security Council said it was “gravely concerned by the threat that acts of piracy and armed robbery against vessels pose to the prompt, safe and effective delivery of humanitarian aid to Somalia, the safety of commercial maritime routes and to international navigation.”
