Malta, (insidesomalia.org)-The Armed Forces of Malta rescued 53 irregular immigrants who were adrift in two boats in Maltese territorial waters on Tuesday. A group of 19 men and six women were found by a Maltese fishing vessel some 2 miles off il-Mara Point.
Maritime Squadron AFM immediately dispatched its Swift-class patrol-boat, P-23, to the scene in a rough Force 5 south-westerly sea-swell.
A fibreglass boat powered by an outboard engine was found containing 27 migrants onboard, 7 of which were females.
They were escorted under their own power to the Wied il-Buni mooring quay near the Freeport in Birzebbugia.
The migrants, who cliamed to be all Somalis and related amongst themselves by family ties, asserted they had left Libya some 5 days ago.
Visibly lacking water, they were offered food and drink by the AFM personnel.
Present on site were the MJHA's Dentention Service's commanding officer, Leiutenant Colonel Brian Gatt as well as a number of District and Mobile Squad policemen.
The migrants were subsequently handed over to the Immigration Police authorities for inprocessing at Police HQ.
Another group was rescued this evening, at about 2030CEST.
Just about it was about to cast off from its berth at the Wied il-Buni quay in B'Bugia, AFM patrol-boat P23 encountered yet another boatload of migrants, some 26 Somalis again, 6 of which were females.
One female was hyperventilating, and was immediately taken to hospital.
