House rental fees in parts of Mogadishu goes up to it’s height level since violence in Mogadishu intensified in the past year.
Some of Mogadishu’s neighbourhoods such as Bulo Hubey, Kaaran, Shibis, Madina, and Elasha where violence is less than other parts of Mogadishu including Bakara area, Huriwaa , Suqa Xoolaha and residential area along the industrial Street and Shirkole, the house rental fees increased more than five times fold.
The rent house payments for a single room of an apartment was nearly 5 US Dollar per month before the recent fighting between government forces backed by Ethiopian army against insurgents broke out, now, goes up to 15US Dollars.
“Even if you could afford such a higher rental fees, it is difficult to acquire a unoccupied room in these areas” said Mohamed Abdirahman, a father of four children who has fled from Huriwa neighbourhood, where most fierce fighting in Mogadishu took place, sought a vacant room from Bulo Hubey area for more than a month from now.
The amount owing an apartment of three to four bedrooms, kitchen, veranda and a sitting room was 100US Dollars before fighting, now up to 200US Dollars if one is available.
At the Elasha area were more than 200,000 people sought shelter from the violence in Mogadishu renting a house costs higher than expense than inside Mogadishu and most the people displaced by the fighting in Mogadishu have a preference to live in the make shift huts made of the sticks than those hired at higher level costs.
In Marka and Afgoi town, both from the lower Shabelle region, house rental fees are higher and most rental houses were already occupied by people who fled from the capital, Mogadishu.
The average monthly income of the Somali family is almost 50US Dollars except those who rely on their relatives abroad receiving almost 150US Dollars per month through the transmittal companies.
It is difficult for a family of such low income to hire houses to pay higher rental fees.
