Mogadishu,(insidesomalia.org)-SOHRIDEN is appalled by the ever-worsening situation in Mogadishu which the civilians are the most suffering. Destruction and looting is not a solution to deracinate the insurgent bases as the TFG forces claims always when targeting Bakara market. The TFG should analyze and consider the consequences and the impacts resulting after taking a military action in a condensed business market and highly populated area like Bakara and the both side should stop fighting in side the civilians and should know that they will be accounted for the violations resulted " says SOHRIDEN Chairperson and Focal point of East and horn of Africa Human Rights defenders Network for Somalia.
We have been operating our business in this market for many years and if there are few merchants backing the insurgents suspected in here, why the TFG intelligence could made a plan of targeting those supporting their opponents and easily target them " said a business women who requested anonymity and told our office that a capital worth of fourth six thousand cash and commodities estimated thirty three thousand USD have been looted today from her wholesaler shop in the Ba'adlaha.
"The destruction of Bakara market which is the source of income for hundreds of thousands of people who are defenseless civilians and their livelihood depends upon the operations of the market could not be attributed to as they are hosting insurgents in the area. Their small shops and all their belongings were destructed “says Eng. Sidow, Wanlawayn Human Rights organization after contacted with those desperate low income people and dependants of Bakara market.
Reports received from KAHRO and GAASHAAN human rights organizations revealed that a mass destruction of the market took place for the last three days. Besides the death of the innocent civilians and the properties looted the TFG forces also confiscated the equipments of the local radios and all the accessories used for their operations in the area such Radio Horn afrik, Capital Voice, Shabelle and Simba. Muktar Mohamed Hirable, the Shabelle radio director was arrested today.
SOHRIDEN would like to reiterate the need for the Transitional Federal Government to respect and uphold freedom of the media. -The role of the media in holding governments accountable to the people they serve, cannot be over-emphasized. Through their role, journalists ensure checks and balances within the two warring factions thus bridging the information gap, and they must not be hindered in this endeavor. This continued targeting the free media houses, journalists by the TFG must stop immediately, says Ahmed Kiimiko Chairperson of SOHRIDEN and focal point of east and horn of Africa Human rights defenders for Somalia.
SOHRIDEN also calls the TFG forces to release Mr. Mukhtar Mohamed Hirabe unconditionally and all the equipments and the resources looted from the radio stations returned soon. Also SOHRIDEN warns the TFG to refrain from targeting journalists and closure of media houses to halting the activities of radio stations working to protect the rights of their people and feeding them information .We also call the TFG leaders to return the properties looted to their owners and those who committed this crime should be prosecuted accordingly. We call the TFG leaders to stop all military actions and put all their efforts to reconciliation and open dialogue with their opponents.
The people of Somalia have already suffered too many human rights violations, and civilians have had to endure abuses for far too long," the human rights organization said. "Both Somalia's TFG and those insurgents opposing them claim that they want to transform Somalia into a safe and secure country, where human rights are respected. But if even the Bakara market is looted by government forces and both sides fought inside the Market and where most bossiness was going, shelling indiscriminately the civilians, knowing that humanitarian staff cannot carry out their work freely, and have been killed the expatriates MSF Holland, who came to help our poor people in Kismayo as Dahir Ali Kamin Chairperson of SEHRO reported, considering all these successive events the future of human rights in Somalia looks very miserable indeed" Concluded SOHRIDEN chairperson and Focal Of East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Network for Somalia.
