Baidoa, (insidesomalia.org)-A Somali member of parliament has accused security guards employed by the United Nations of physically assaulting him.
MP Mohamud Ahmed Kulalihi told reporters in the southwestern town of Baidoa where parliament sits that he recently visited the UNICEF compound and got into an argument with guards at the front entrance.
The guards beat the MP "with the back of a rifle" following the heated argument.
"I informed the UNICEF head in Baidoa Isak Ali, but he [Ali] told me that the guards cannot be charged with crime," MP Kulalihi said.
The legislator then went to Baidoa police, who told him to visit a doctor and "bring evidence" of the physical assault.
"After I brought them [police] evidence, they then told me that those men [UNICEF guards] will not be arrested," MP Kulalihi said.
The Somali lawmaker said "there is injustice in Baidoa" since parliamentarians are less valuable than security guards.
Officials at the Somali Ministry of Internal Affairs acknowledged they heard MP Kulalihi's complaints, but could not comment on the case.
