Mogadishu, (insidesomalia.org) Massive problems face next door to the people displaced from fighting in Mogadishu who are currently living in the IDP camps at the Elasha area near Afgoi, a town 32km south west of the capital city of Somalia.
United Nations estimates that more 200,000 people live in these camps positioned along the road connecting Mogadishu to Afgoi but with hard living conditions.
More families inside the camps are worried about the new rainy season for the reason of the lack of cover their make shift huts made of sticks from the down pour, cold and the hot sun.
“Our huts could be destroyed easily by the heavy rains” said Hamdi Ali, a resident at one of the Elasha IDP camps known as Iltire Camp.
Furqaan camp for the displaced people, 600 families currently live inside it with more then ten new families registered last week.
Access for space for resettlement of the new arrivals is limited and most of the open spaces were so far occupied by people from the capital of Mogadishu.
Furqaan camp has only 13 toilets installed with the support of two NGO’s, Hijra, a local NGO and Danish Refugee Council, Danish humanitarian NGO.
“The toilets are not enough compared to number of the people living inside the camp” said Hasino Farah Abdi, the coordinator of Furqaan camp.
“If enough latrines were not dig up immediately before the heavy rainy season, health problems may arise especially those relating to contagious diseases” Hasino added.
