Mogadishu, (insidesomalia.org) - An influential woman activist and lobbyist for peace and human rights has died on Friday from gunshot wounds and was laid to rest on Saturday at the outskirts of Mogadishu.
Madina Mohamoud Elmi "Madina General" was accidently shot by a soldier while she was distributing aid to internally displaced people from Mogadishu's recent fighting between goverment forces backed by the Ethiopian troops against Islamist insurgents. Doctors at Madina hospital tried to save her, but failed.
The funeral was attended by people from civil societies, Intellectuals , human rights groups, and ordinary citizens. 'She will remain in our hearts for her dedicated activities towards the Somali community especially vulnerable people" said Abdalahi Shirwa, a prominent civil society leader in Mogadishu.
She was credited and highly praised for her efforts to reopening a children's hospital in Mogadishu in 2004 which has been closed for than a decade due to enduring political disagreements.
