Gargeysa,(insidesomalia.org)-Vice President Ahmed Yusuf Yasin declared here this morning of a severe drought in some of the region and shortage of water. “I appeal to the international community and the people of Somaliland that drought and severe shortage of water has it most of the eastern regions of the country. I appeal to them to provide emergency aid to avert a calamity.”

Mr. Ahmed Yusuf Yasin added that he prefers that people specially those living in the regions hit by the drought pray to God to help them ease the situation.”

Elaborating this he said , “I call on the people to pray individually and in mosques for the next 8 days .I also recommend that they gather in public- if it does not rain- with all schools closed and work stopped for general prayer on the 9th day .”

The Vice President added that concerned ministries and regional authorities report within 3 days and to inform UN and INGO’s of the real extent of the shortage of water and drought.

Speaking of the government’s plan to prevent future droughts he said, “We should take steps to stop the continuous and direct flow of water to the sea, by drilling wells and making places for holding water. I also inform the people that this flow is causing the waters in some wells to have become salty.”
