Mogadishu, (insidesomalia.org) - Somali teachers’ day, November 21st was not commemorated this year in Mogadishu and many other cities in Somalia.
The day which was always celebrated with speeches and festival occasions in the schools dedicated for the great efforts done by Somali teachers enhancing education was null and void because of the fighting in Mogadishu between government forces backed by Ethiopian army against Islamist insurgents.
“Teachers’ living conditions is at it’s lowest level and unemployment is overwhelming among them” said Abdulahi Elmi , a teacher who is now unemployed living at the outskirts of Mogadishu.
Somali’s system of education re-emerged after private owned and universities come into effect and educational umbrellas were established although Somali curriculum seem to be disappearing replaced by foreign ones.
November 21, Somali Teacher Day proclaimed by the Somali Revolutionary leader General Mohamed Siad Barre celebrated annually during 21 years of the military regime but almost forgotten during the 16 years of the civil unrest in Somalia.
It will take long time recover from this set back and will cause students to take up arms further fuelling violence.
In an increasing globally competitive arena where education is backbone of society, Somalia is losing yet again.
