France utterly condemns the dreadful attack that has just taken place in Mogadishu against the African Union Mission in Somalia and has resulted in many casualties.

In these particularly tragic circumstances, I extend my condolences to the Somali Government and people, as well as to Uganda and Burundi, countries that make a vital contribution towards carrying out AMISOM?s missions.

France reaffirms its unfailing support for AMISOM?s role and missions aimed at achieving peace and stability in Somalia. AMISOM has been present in Somalia since spring 2007 and has a mandate from the Security Council. The members of the Security Council unanimously reaffirmed their support for AMISOM through resolution 1863 of January 16, 2009.

We are examining methods, in particular military-based methods, of coming swiftly to the aid of the injured.

We also reaffirm our full support for the Transitional Federal Government, which is the only legitimate political authority in Somalia. France, like all of the international community, stands alongside the TFG and its president, Sheikh Sharif.
