Somalia: nearly 30 journalists to stop reporting from Mogadishu PDF Print E-mail

Mukhtar Mohamed Hirabe was killed on Sunday. (NUSOJ)Mogadishu (insidesomalia.org) - Nearly thirty journalists in Mogadishu have agreed to cease reporting on events taking place following the killing of two staff members of Radio Shabelle on Sunday. 

This is fifth journalists to be killed this year and ten journalist were also killed in 2008.  Somalia is one of the most dangerous places for journalists to work.

The journalist have gathered in Mogadishu and announced that the risk to their lives does not warrant reporting unless warring sides respect rights of journalists and freedom of reporting.

Head of news for Universal TV Ilmi Osmaan Faarax (Ilmi Boodheri) told in an interview with VOA that it is not possible to report continue in current deadly conditions.  It is not possible to continue reporting in current climate.

Ilmi Boodhari  mentioned number of ways to get in touch journalists including sending or phoning events to journalists.  Journalists will not be moving around areas of conflict.

No one has claimed the recent killings and kidnapping of Somali Journalists.

Somalia is least transparent and open country due to risk and will make difficult for international community to be informed of developments in Somalia.
